Consultant in Pain Medicine

Leading Cannabis Medicine Specialist

Already expert in the use of conventional pain medicines, I have more recently taken a major interest in the newly-available cannabis-based medicines (CBM’s). I am already one of the UK’s most experienced prescribers of cannabis-based medicines.

Throughout my 30 years in pain medicine, I have come to realise the strengths of conventional pain treatments, but also some of their areas of weakness. Throughout that time, I’ve been fascinated by lectures at medical scientific meetings about the body’s endocannabinoid system. This natural system regulates pain, mood, the immune system and many other bodily functions. It restores normality in the body. But we think that when the system is weakened, imbalance can lead to long term pain, and the low mood and fatigue which are found in many long-term pain conditions.

I was therefore excited, in November 2018, when UK regulations changed to allow specialists to prescribe CBM’s legally in this country. CBM’s work on the endocannabinoid system.

Over many months of prescribing CBM’s, I’ve been delighted at how well so many patients have done on low doses of these medicines. I am now lead clinical at Medisonal

Prescription-only Cannabis-Based Medicines usually include CBD +THC + terpenes

When properly used, CBM’s produce few or no side effects, with much less likelihood of causing dependency than conventional medicines such as morphine, codeine and tramadol,  or pregabalin, and even modern anti-depressants such as sertraline.

For the first time, we have a medicine for fibromyalgia, and related conditions such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, that actually works. We can help people with long-term pain and other conditions ranging from arthritis, back conditions, migraine, nerve pain, gynae pain and so on. This range of conditions goes all the way to psychological difficulties that afflict so many people, for example, anxiety, depression, ADHD and PTSD, even when people are already on the best conventional medical treatments. And we happily work in collaboration with patients, GP’s and medical specialists.

I’d be very happy to see you to discuss whether CBM’s might be helpful for you, or alternatively visit the Medisonal website to find out more.
